Triphala
The most popular Ayurvedic herbal formula is Triphala. In fact, Triphala is considered somewhat of a panacea in Ayurveda because it has a unique ability to detoxify the body, and at the same time deeply nourish and strengthen the body.
Triphala is a Sanskrit word and is translated as “three (tri) fruits (phala).” It contains Amalaki, Bibhitaki & Haritaki. These three fruits are each rich in different actions, uses and nutrients and the formula is considered tri-doshic which means it has a balancing effect on all three doshas.
Amalaki – Balancing for Pitta Amalaki or amla is highly regarded as a tonic for longevity as its rejuvenative qualities are very strong. Amalaki is well known for its cooling effects on the body and is used to treat many Pitta (heat) imbalances like inflammation, fever, liver weakness, gastritis, premature gray and/or balding...just to name a few. Research also shows Amalaki to contain high concentrations of bioflavonoids, tannins, amino acids minerals and antioxidant vitamins. In fact, Amalaki is one of the best sources of antioxidant vitamins and is said to have twenty times as much vitamin C as orange juice (3000 mg per fruit). It is nourishes and strengthens. the blood, bones, liver and heart and is also known to increase red blood cell count.
Bibhitaki – Balancing for Kapha In Sanskrit Bibhitaki means 'the one that keeps you away from the disease.' Bibhitaki is an exceptional herb for detoxifying and rejuvenating Kapha type conditions of the lungs such as bronchitis, cough and kapha type colds. It has the ability to break up accumulating Kapha that presents as excess mucus and stones. It also strengthens voice quality and promotes hair growth.
Haritaki – Balancing for Vata Haritaki means “Life Giver” in Sanskrit and is highly revered in India. It is considered one of the best rejuvenative herbs for Vata and Vata type conditions such as nervous disorders, gas, muscular rheumatism, itching, and is used in treatment for both chronic constipation and diarrhea. Haritaki feeds the brain and is said to increase energy, wisdom and intelligence. All three herbs, Amalaki, Bibhitaki & Haritaki assist in internal cleansing, tone the bowels and have a natural laxative effect.
Bringing them all together.... When Amalaki, Bibhitaki and Haritaki come together as the formulation known as Triphala, the result is a powerful compound with combined actions to: promote internal cleansing, improve and strengthen digestion, assimilation & absorption, remove excess mucus, improve liver function, strengthen the nervous system, improve circulation and purify the blood.
How to take Triphala Generally almost everyone can benefit from taking Triphala, although it is contraindicated for pregnant women and those taking blood thinning drugs. Triphala is available in capsule, tablets and also as a tea. It is generally safe to use daily but some Ayurvedic doctors and practitioners suggest taking the herb for six months at a time, and then taking break for 3-4 weeks before continuing. The appropriate dose is between one and three capsules or tablets daily. To make Triphala tea add 1 teaspoon of triphala powder to a glass of water and stir then let sit overnight. In the morning the sediment will have settled at the bottom and the water will be light brown in color. Pour the brown water into another glass and leave the sediment behind. Now drink the tea. If you find it unpalatable, stir in ½ teaspoon of raw honey. A popular folk saying in India is “No mother? Do not worry so long as you have Triphala!”
