Ether and Air are termed Vata in Ayurveda.  Think of Ether (or space) as ideas or forms or matter.  Ether is the idea of connectedness and air is the idea of motion.  The definition of Vata is "That which moves things."  Vata is the force within the body responsible for all motion.  

 

Vata body - Vata people tend to light in weight with small bones.  They also are inclined to have dry, rough, and dark skin; large crooked, or protruding teeth; a small thin mouth; and dry and dull eyes.

 

Vata emotions - When Vatas are in balance they are energetic, enthusiastic, clear and fun. 

Out of balance, they are prone to anxiety, tension, fear and can have are prone to emotional insecurity. 

 

Vata mind - They are highly creative with an an active, restless mind.  They are good at remembering recent events, but have a poor long-term memory.  They speak quickly and are quick to learn, but often do not retain their recent acquired knowledge.

 

Vata Internal Tendencies - Strong metabolism, sensitive and variable digestion, variable appetites, sleep light and or medium duration.  Their sleep is often interrupted.

 

Vata Diseases - They often have disorders of the nervous system, experience flatulence, tics, twitches, aching joints, dry skin and hair, constipation and confusion.

 

They tend towards asceticism and often have a well-developed spiritual side which leads them to study esoteric subjects.

 

Vata Food and Lifestyle Suggestions

Drink warm water when you wake up.  Eat a cooked, warm rich foods often in moderately spiced meals including one just before the sun sets. Make sure to get sweet, sour and salty tastes in your diet.  Avoid dry light food like popcorn, crackers & chips as well bitter, astringent and pungent tastes.  

 

Get plenty of rest and relaxation.  Gentle yoga, stretching, breathing practices, meditation walking are all advised.  Limit excess exercise and avoid over-stimulation and late night activities.  Self warm oil massages are helpful.  Stay warm and take warm baths or use a hot water bottle on the abdomen as needed to soothe the nervous system.
